History of the village
The name Drašnice comes from the word thorn, as thorns
used to grow in most parts of Dalmatia. For the first time
Drašnice were mentioned in Turkish documents at the end of the
15th century. However there exist proofs of life in this area
older than 8000 years (Younger Stone Age Neolithic). The
uniqueness of Drašnice is created by old stone houses at the
foot of the Biokovo Mountain, nowadays called old village. In
the 60th the inhabitants decided to abandon this village and
move down to the sea in order to have an easier life and to
host the first tourists visiting this area. In the past the
people in this region lived of agriculture, fishing and trade.
This is witnessed by different types of tools used for
cultivating olive trees, fishing, etc. Today they are turning
to another occupation called tourism and everything linked to
it.
